Dexamethasone is a glucocorticoid in the form of a sodium phosphate salt which is very soluble in water. It has strong anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, stimulates hepatic gluconeogenesis and inhibits protein synthesis. It has a regulatory effect on the cardiovascular system and indicates childbirth. As a side effect, immunosuppressive effect and suppression of adrenal activity are noted. It has a very poor mineralortikoid effect. Injection site resorption is very fast. Dexamethasone penetrates well into tissues (large volume of distribution). Its metabolism occurs mainly in the liver and metabolites are excreted in the form of glucuronide via urine and bile.
