Onsior Injection  is formulated to control post-surgical pain in cats through once-a-day administration.

Elanco Animal Health has released an injectable formulation of Onsior for pain management in cats.

onsior injection (robenacoxib) tablets were launched in 2012 under Novartis Animal Health, which Elanco acquired earlier this year. The two formulations may be used interchangeably, Elanco reported this week.

Onsior injection is indicated for 24-hour control of postoperative pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery, ovariohysterectomy and castration.

The drug may be used in cats at least 4 months old and weighing at least 5.5 pounds.

Onsior injection “provides veterinarians with the flexibility to choose the administration formulation and corresponding labeled dose that best fit within their surgical protocols,” the Greenfield, Ind., company stated.

Composition and form of releaseOnsior solution for injection in 1 ml contains robenacoxib – 20 mg as an active ingredient, and as auxiliary substances: anhydrous ethanol, poloxamer 188, citric acid monohydrate, sodium pyrosulfite (E223), sodium hydroxide, macrogol 400 and water for injection. In appearance, the drug is a clear solution of light pink color. The Onsior solution for injection is released, packaged in 20 ml each in colored glass vials of appropriate capacity, sealed with rubber stoppers, reinforced with aluminum caps. Vials are placed individually in cardboard boxes along with instructions for use. Vacation conditions: without a prescription from a veterinarian.Pharmacological propertiesOnsior ™ injection is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Robenacoxib, which is part of the drug, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent of the coxib group, is a selective specific inhibitor of COX-2 and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. COX is presented in two forms: COX-1 – a constitutive form of the enzyme – performs protective functions, including in the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys; COX-2, an inducible form of the enzyme, is responsible for the production of mediators, including PGEg, that cause pain, inflammation and fever. After subcutaneous administration of the drug, robenacoxib is rapidly absorbed from the injection site, enters the systemic circulation and most organs and tissues; more than 99% of robenacoxib binds to plasma proteins. Its maximum plasma concentration is observed after 1 hour, bioavailability is 69% in cats and 88% in dogs. Robenacoxib is metabolized in the liver, excreted mainly in the bile (about 70% in cats and about 65% in dogs) and partially in the urine; the half-life from the body of dogs is about 1.2 hours, cats – 1.1 hours. Onsior ™ solution for injection, according to the degree of impact on the body, belongs to moderately hazardous substances (hazard class 3 according to GOST 12.1.007).Indications
